Over 3,000 people joined The Jed Foundation’s "It’s On My Mind" campaign to raise awareness of World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10th, 2009. Through virtual events on Facebook and Twitter, users were able to use their status and tweets to promote World Suicide Prevention Day and express their commitment to protecting the emotional health of young people across the country. The “It’s On My Mind” Facebook page was the hub of the movement and users used this forum to discuss suicide prevention efforts, share their stories and remember friends and family members. Pete Wentz, member of the Grammy nominated band Fall Out Boy, helped promote the day by sending a message to his 1.5 million followers on Twitter.
World Suicide Prevention Day is an initiative led by the World Health Organization and the International Association for Suicide Prevention to educate the public about suicide and focus attention on prevention efforts around the world. The day was honored at many events online and around the world including a forum at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. Speakers from organizations like the World Health Organization, Yale University, the Association for Suicide Prevention and the National Suicide Lifeline gathered to address suicide as a global concern, sharing research, statistics and policies. The UN conference room was filled to capacity and the eight speakers were received with applause for their insight into suicide across the world.
